Julia Lapp is completely frustrated with her fiance’ Paul Fisher and the traveling beekeeper, Roman Troyer. If Julia had it her way, the meddling beekeeper would never set foot on her property again! There’s an epidemic of broken engagements going around and Julia thinks Roman is the cause.
Once again, Paul unexpectedly postpones his wedding to Julia right after talking to the carefree, traveling man who shows up once a year to help pollinate the Amish orchards. Julia begins to wonder if she’ll ever make it to the altar and say her vows and she’s not alone. Several other weddings are cancelled when the grooms get cold feet and the jilted brides- to -be are blaming Roman Troyer for influencing their sweethearts.
Adding insult to injury, Julia has to tolerate Fern Graber, the crochety, stern woman who comes to help out with the household chores while Julia’s father is ailing with heart problems and waiting for a transplant. Fern is rigid, no-nonsense and determined to whip the house and the inhabitants into shape, much to the chagrin of the Lapp girls.
I not only enjoyed this humorous story, but the characters as well. I really appreciated that while the story revolves around Amish characters, the book wasn’t overdone in Pennsylvania Dutch, and had a more contemporary feel.
First book in the Stoney Ridge Seasons series, The Keeper is a wonderful story and gives readers a lot to look forward to in the books following.
