Café Lily’s Review:
Highland Blessings, Jennifer Hudson Taylor’s debut novel, is a historical medieval romance that will transport you back in time to 15th century
. Rival clans, the MacPhearsons’ and the MacKenzies’, have a long history of controversy between them. As Cedric MacPhearson, (chieftan of his clan) lays dying, he asks his son Bryce to make and keep an impossible promise, preventing the marriage of Evan MacPhearson to Akira MacKenzie. Scotland
When Cedric refuses to honor his son Evan’s betrothal to Akira MacKenzie (a pledge made in their childhood), Akira’s father gives her permission to marry the man of her choosing. Unfortunately, Akira’s groom leaves her standing at the altar on her wedding day. As Akira stands humiliated, Bryce MacPhearson rides in with his warriors, kidnaps her and the adventure begins.
Highland Blessings is an exciting story of love, betrayal and romance with rich historical facts woven into the mix. I really enjoyed the author’s note in the back of the book which explains more about Scottish culture including the kilt and clan colors. There are also discussion questions included, which help the readers dig deeper into the story.
Bryce MacPhearson, a highland warrior, kidnaps Akira MacKenzie on her wedding day to honor a promise he made to his dying father. While Akira’s strength in the Lord becomes a witness to Bryce, she struggles to overcome her anger and resentment when he forces her to wed him, hoping to end a half-century-old feud between their clans. While Akira begins to forgive, and Bryce learns to trust, a series of murders leaves a trail of unanswered questions, confusion, and a legacy of hate that once again rises between their families. Clearly, a traitor is in their midst. Now the one man Akira loves no longer trusts her, and her own life is in danger. Can Bryce look beyond his pain and seek the truth? Will Akira discover the threat against her before it’s too late? How will God turn a simple promise into bountiful
