The Inheritance of Beauty

As soon as I read the author’s note in the beginning of this book, I was hooked.  With a huge lump in my throat, I bravely started the first chapter knowing full well I was a goner; I fell in love with this book immediately!

Inspired by her grandmother and some true events from long ago, Nicole writes an engaging, emotional story that gently flows back and forth from the past to the present.  And though the viewpoint of the story often changes between characters, this story is amazingly easy to follow though it’s a bit complex. The story is told through the memories of the characters, including Maggie’s, though she can’t communicate verbally.

The story begins in the Harmony House nursing home where childhood sweethearts, George and Maggie (Magnolia) Jacobs are living. George is attentive and takes very good care of his wife whom he is madly in love with, even though she doesn’t even recognize him anymore.

Their sleepy little world is turned upside down one day when Maggie receives a large mysterious package and a letter which causes quite a commotion within the elderly community.  Unlocking the mystery of this package and letter is the central theme of the story, and the secrets this mystery unearths forces George to deal with skeletons in his past that he hoped were buried.  George is also dealing with some hard news of his own – he has just been diagnosed with cancer.

The devotion of a husband to his aging wife in this story is heart warming and shows that true love never dies.  All of the characters have major obstacles to overcome but through it all, love never fails.

I really enjoyed how this story kept me on my toes never knowing what to expect with each chapter.  I fell in love with the characters and could hardly put this book down, wanting to know what was going to happen next.  A sweet love story based in the south, sure to please those who enjoy inspirational fiction.

From The Back of the Book:

Beauty, like truth, is enduring. But only one can set you free.

Maggie Black came of age in the lush, fragrant low country of South Carolina--spending her days with her beloved brother and the boy she would grow up to marry. But when a stranger arrived one summer, Maggie couldn't imagine the evil he would bring with him. And though she escaped with her life, the ramifications of that fateful summer would alter all of their lives forever.

Now, some eighty years later, Maggie and her husband George are spending their remaining days in a nursing home, helpless as age slowly robs Maggie of her ability to communicate. When a mysterious package arrives, followed closely by a stranger whose identity haunts them, Maggie and George are hemmed in by a history they'd rather forget.

As the truth reveals itself, George knows he must face the past and its lifetime of repercussions. It's the only way to free himself and his precious wife--if it's not too late.

The Inheritance of Beauty is a rich and enchanting story about age and the ability of true beauty to transcend one's life.
